BROOKLYN, NY — The young guns on the Golden Boy roster took center stage last night in NYC with Sadam Ali, Michael Perez and Marcus Browne all scoring victories at the Barclays Center. The card started slow, but steadily built into one of the better showcases we’ve seen thus far from the Fox Sports 1-Golden Boy partnershi[. Let’s start with the fun main event that looked like a potential upset early on.

This main event was billed as the big national stage debut of 2008 Olympian and welterweight Sadam Ali (17-0, 10 KOs), who’s built a decent fan base in the city. Jay Krupp (17-6, 8 KOs) had other ideas, coming out throwing wild haymakers and forcing Ali to engage in dangerous exchanges. Ali would soon find himself on the deck at the end of the round courtesy of a big left hook.

Ali did his best to box in the second, where his greater hand speed and technical skill served his offense better. Krupp continued forcing the exchanges, leading to more opportunities to abuse Ali with the left hook.

The tide turned in the third with Ali using his own left hook to score a knockdown. While Krupp remained aggressive and gave his opponent some trouble, most noticeably in the fifth courtesy of several right hands, Ali was able to pick off Krupp’s wild shots with accurate counters and movement.

In the final round, Ali punctuated his comeback with another knockdown, this one off a right hand counter. Final scores were unanimous for Ali: 79-72, 78-71 and 77-72

On the undercard, junior welterweight Michael Perez (19-1-2, 10 KOs) took a 10-round unanimous decision over Miguel Zuniga (13-3, 8 KOs). Perez utilized his faster hands to land hard left hooks to the body and head to pile up points early. In addition, it would be a left hook counter that stunned Zuniga in the second. However, Zuniga showed a sturdy chin and power by rattling Perez whenever he stayed in the pocket too long. Zuniga’s work would produce a bleeding cut under Perez’s left eye, but that was the extent of his damage — Perez wisely started to potshot and hold in the later rounds, effectively nullifying Zuniga’s pressure and ability to score. The scorecards, all for Perez, read 99-91 twice and 96-94.

The opening TV bout was a frustrating one for light-heavyweight prospect Marcus Browne (7-0, 6 KOs), who could never find a consistent rhythm or means of attack against Lamont Williams (5-2-1, 2 KOs). The fight was marked by a lot of posing early, as each fighter was looking for big counters, and chippy fouls inside (each man butted in close and threw forearms). The fouls affected Browne more, and soon his punches turned into amateurish swings as he looked to keep his perfect KO record in tact. Browne never got Williams in any serious danger, but he took the later rounds by clipping the constantly retreating Williams with straight lefts. Browne was awarded the unanimous decision via scores of 79-72 twice and 76-75.
